An unexpected situation occurred on the political stage of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander accepted the resignation of several high-ranking officials from the “New Social Contract” party.
The main reason for the resignations is cited as the worsening situation in the Gaza Strip and the unsuccessful attempts to introduce strict measures against Israel.
List of those who resigned:
-
Kaspar Veldkamp — Minister of Foreign Affairs;
-
Eddie van Heijem — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Affairs and Employment;
-
Judith Outermark — Minister of the Interior;
-
Eppo Bruins — Minister of Education, Culture and Science;
-
Daniel Jansen — Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport.
It was also reported that four state secretaries resigned from their posts.
Veldkamp’s firm stance
According to Deutsche Welle, the main initiator was Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp. He proposed taking strict measures against Israel, but this initiative did not receive sufficient support in parliament and within the party. Therefore, he personally decided to resign, and several of his fellow party members followed him.
Impact on political processes
Experts believe these resignations may significantly aggravate the situation within the Dutch government. At the same time, this event could mark the beginning of a new phase in the country’s foreign policy.
This situation once again highlighted how divided European political forces remain on the issue of Gaza.
