A highly alarming situation was recorded in Iranian prisons during July, causing serious concern among human rights organizations. According to the monthly report released by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least 160 prisoners were executed in the country’s prisons in one month through the enforcement of death sentences. It is also noted that three of them were publicly hanged.
The report states that during the past month, Iranian courts issued 16 new death sentences. In addition, the Supreme Court of Iran upheld the death penalty for 4 individuals. This once again confirmed the extensive use of capital punishment in the country.
According to official data collected since the beginning of this year, the number of executions in eight months has reached 818 people. Among the confirmed cases, it is specifically highlighted that 21 of them were women. These figures further intensify international criticism of Iran’s penal policy.
Human rights organizations have long condemned the Iranian government for its excessive and often unfair use of the death penalty. They also stress the lack of protection of prisoners’ rights, insufficient transparency in prisons, and the fact that judicial proceedings often do not meet standards of fairness.
