A new resort, Wonsan-Kalma, has opened on the eastern coast of North Korea. Hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and a water park have been built there. In July, the first trip to this place was organized from Russia.
One of the Russian tourists — Anastasia Samsonova — took part in this trip and shared her impressions. According to her, tourists were always accompanied by guides and were not allowed to deviate from the set route. Communication with local residents was also restricted.
At the same time, the beaches were appreciated by the tourists. According to Samsonova, the white sandy shores were empty and clean, and the infrastructure was modern and new. However, there were rules for taking photos: construction sites or very revealing clothes could not be photographed.
The Wonsan-Kalma project began in 2018 and is considered part of Kim Jong Un's plans to develop tourism. However, international organizations criticize it, saying forced labor may have been used there.
The cost of a trip from Russia to North Korea averaged $1,800. This is more expensive than the average monthly salary in Russia.
