Ukrainian ship sank from drone strike for first time

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on August 28, a Ukrainian Navy reconnaissance vessel named "Simferopol" was sunk after a drone strike. Shortly after, this attack was also confirmed by the Ukrainian Navy. It should be noted that for the Russian army, this is the first successful attempt to destroy an enemy ship using an unmanned boat.

According to reports, as the publication "Dumska" wrote, the attack took place around midnight. The "Simferopol" was then moving along the lower reaches of the Danube. As a result of the impact, a large hole appeared on the ship's side, and the ship overturned and sank.

According to the official representative of the Ukrainian Navy, Dmitry Pletonchuk, some crew members are currently listed as missing. One person has been killed, and several other military personnel have been reported injured.

This event was noted as the first official instance of Russia's effective use of naval drones against Ukrainian ships. The Ministry of Defense even released a video of this attack and brought it to the attention of the general public.

The Telegram channel "Ribar" noted that the drone had traveled approximately 25 kilometers along the Danube River before the strike. According to the channel's authors, it is also possible that Ukrainian observers thought the drone was their own equipment.

Thus, the sinking of Simferopol signifies the transition of the naval conflict between Ukraine and Russia to a new stage. This event will undoubtedly have a serious impact not only on the military sphere, but also on geopolitical processes.
