American faked his death for lover, sentenced to 89 days in jail

A Wisconsin man faked his own death in order to meet his lover abroad and fled the country. According to Peopletalk, he will now spend nearly three months behind bars.

Reports say he pretended to drown while kayaking, leaving behind his wife and three children, in order to meet a woman living in Georgia. Later, he fled the country.

During the trial, he was found guilty of concealing information from law enforcement and sentenced to 89 days in prison. Interestingly, the length of the sentence matched the number of days he misled people about his whereabouts.

He also agreed to pay $30,000 in compensation for the efforts and expenses authorities spent searching for him. “I deeply regret what I did that night and the pain I caused my family and friends,” he said in court.

During the investigation, it was discovered that he had obtained a new passport several months before his disappearance. This fact indicated to investigators that he had deliberately staged his own death as part of a plan to flee the country.
