After social media was banned in Nepal, many people took to the streets. More than 20 people were killed in clashes with the police. Following this, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned. A nationwide curfew was imposed, and the army is trying to restore order.
The events in Nepal resemble recent crises in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Nepal is an important neighbour for India, as the two countries share an open border of 1,750 km. Millions of Nepalis live and work in India.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the events in Nepal. He called for peace and held an emergency meeting with government members.
Experts say Nepal’s instability poses a risk to India. The country borders China and is located in a strategic region. Therefore, India will need to act cautiously in dealing with the new government.
