Climate change: 1.5 million people at risk

According to Australia’s National Climate Risk Assessment, by 2050 more than 1.5 million people living in coastal areas will be at risk from rising sea levels. The report highlights severe impacts of climate change, including floods, cyclones, heatwaves, droughts, and bushfires.

Australia has already warmed by 1.5°C. If warming reaches 3°C, heat-related deaths in Sydney could increase fourfold and nearly triple in Melbourne.

Coastal communities, northern Australia, remote areas, and outer suburbs of major cities are at highest risk. This will put pressure on health, critical infrastructure, ecosystems, and primary industries, and make emergency responses more difficult.

Experts stress that taking action against climate change is always cheaper than inaction. Preventing each degree of warming will help future generations avoid the worst impacts.
