Portugal announced that it has recognized the State of Palestine after the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, Gazeta.uz reported. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel made a statement to journalists at the UN headquarters about this.
According to the minister, recognizing Palestine is one of the permanent and main directions of Portugal's foreign policy. “This decision expresses our belief in the only path leading to just and lasting peace — the two-state solution,” he said.
The Portuguese government condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, forced displacement of the population, and the destruction of infrastructure, schools, and hospitals. According to Rangel, recognizing Palestine does not solve these problems immediately but is a political step towards their resolution.
