A political event in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu turned into a tragic disaster. At least 39 people died in a stampede at a pre-election rally of the famous actor and politician Vijay in Karur district. According to official information, women, men, and children are among the deceased.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the rally held on Saturday. According to local media, instability arose in the crowd due to the event starting several hours later than scheduled. Footage broadcast on television showed people losing consciousness and collapsing on the ground.
Politician Senthil Balaji confirmed the number of casualties to journalists and said that more than 50 people were injured. The state's health minister Ma Subramanian stated that among the victims there are 16 women, 9 men, and 6 children.
According to the leader of the Tamil Nadu government Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, many citizens lost consciousness during the stampede and were taken to hospitals. Doctors were called from neighboring areas to assist the injured. Additionally, a compensation of one million rupees (approximately 11,300 dollars) was designated for the families of the deceased.
An investigation into the tragedy has begun. Vijay, speaking online, said he felt “a shattered heart” and “unbearable pain.” He expressed deep condolences to the victims’ relatives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident a “sad accident” on the social network X.
Stampedes among crowds have frequently occurred in the country in recent years. Similar tragic incidents were recorded this year during the Kumbh Mela festival and while celebrating the victory of the Royal Challengers cricket team.
