In India, the court stressed that doctors’ illegible handwriting can endanger patients’ lives. The Punjab and Haryana High Court stated that prescriptions must be written clearly and legibly, as this is a patient’s right.
Experts say poorly written prescriptions can lead to confusion in dispensing medicines. In some cases, this has caused serious consequences, even death. Therefore, clarity in handwriting is considered crucial.
According to the court ruling, doctors are now required to write prescriptions in capital letters and in a clear manner. At the same time, digitised prescriptions are expected to be introduced within two years.
The Indian Medical Association has also supported the decision, advising doctors to write more clearly. Experts believe that wider use of electronic prescriptions will reduce errors.
