Women who don't wear hijab will no longer be punished - new decision in Iran

The Iranian government has temporarily suspended the implementation of the mandatory hijab law, local media reported. Now women who do not wear hijab will not be subject to fines or other types of punishment. This decision was made against the backdrop of political pressure in the country, widespread public discontent, and international criticism.

For information, at the end of 2023, the Iranian parliament adopted a law "On supporting the family through the promotion of hijab and cleanliness." It provided for large fines and criminal penalties for cases of not wearing a hijab, and sanctions were also imposed on organizations working with women.

However, in 2024-2025, the practical implementation of this law was suspended on the recommendation of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran. Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bohir Qolibof officially confirmed the decision. The government aims to further investigate the potential consequences of law enforcement in society.
