In 2024, a total of 34 officers in Tajikistan deserted their posts. This was reported by the country’s Human Rights Commissioner, Umid Bobozoda, in his annual report.
According to the report, during the past year, 107 criminal cases were initiated related to evasion of military service and failure to follow orders. Among them, 30 young servicemen were held criminally responsible. In addition, 34 officers were found guilty of desertion, while another 28 individuals left their service posts without permission.
The Ombudsman noted that these incidents are often linked to difficult conditions in military units, violence, disciplinary violations, and abusive treatment. He added that in some cases, injuries or deaths during service also push young people to avoid military duty.
Local media reported that relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. However, no official information has yet been released regarding the punishment of the officers who deserted.
