Chinese authorities have begun construction of a massive hydroelectric power station called “Medog” in the Yarlung-Tsangpo River canyon located in Tibet. This was reported by Foreign Policy.
According to environmentalist Wen Jiabao, the construction process is being carried out under strict secrecy. He stated that the project could pose a serious threat to the region’s unique flora and fauna.
South Asia expert Niraj Singh Manhas assessed this move as geopolitically risky. In his view, China’s control over the source of the transboundary Brahmaputra (Yarlung-Tsangpo) River could strengthen its influence over India and Bangladesh in water policy.
Experts consider the “Medog” dam a serious threat to the region’s water balance and climate system. They emphasized that such large-scale construction, carried out without comprehensive environmental and social assessments, could exacerbate the ecological crisis.
Some international observers believe that this “megadam” will not only be China’s next major energy project but could also define a new balance in relations with neighboring countries.
Environmentalists, on the other hand, warn that such projects, implemented without considering potential damage to nature, could negatively affect the region’s stability.
