The American political scene was once again filled with a sensation - this time the reason was something very simple, but symbolic: the tie of the Minister of War, Pete Heggett. The color of the tie worn by the minister during the October 17 meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy sparked considerable controversy among journalists, reports HuffPost.
Hegset wore a white, blue, and red tie at the event. These colors are also present on the American flag, but the sequence on his tie caught attention precisely because it corresponds to the Russian flag.
HuffPost journalist Es Vi Deit asked the Pentagon to comment on the situation. He tried to find out whether Hegset had heard praise from Russia for such a color choice and whether he had worn such a tie before.
However, instead of answering the question, he received a sharp and offensive response from US Department of Defense spokesman Sean Parnell:
"Your mother bought this tie. "This is a real American tie, you idiot," he told the journalist.
After this, journalist Hegset asked whether he was aware of the code prohibiting the use of US flag symbols on clothing.
This time, Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson commented:
"If love for one's country and pride in symbols are considered 'crimes' in left-wing blogs like HuffPost, then Minister Heggett is guilty. He is a true patriot, a person who loves the country and the flag from the bottom of his heart," he said.
These questions from HuffPost sparked new controversy not only around the tie but also with the Trump administration.
The publication previously appealed to the White House for comment on the planned Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest. The answer was again in the form of jokes and insults:
"Your mother did it," White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said.
In American media, this situation is assessed as a trend of "answering serious political questions with personal insults." According to some analysts, the Trump administration has launched a "fight against left-wing journalism" through a recently revived communication style.
At the same time, the scandal surrounding Hegset's "patriotic tie" made the political division in the country even more apparent.
