US President Donald Trump announced new sanctions against Russia’s “Rosneft” and “Lukoil” companies. He said the move was necessary to pressure Russia into signing a peace agreement with Ukraine. According to Trump, “it was time” to impose the sanctions.
Trump canceled a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest. He said Putin was not serious about negotiations, adding, “Every time I talk to him, nothing happens.” Trump expressed hope that the sanctions would push Russia to end the war.
According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the new sanctions target companies that are financing Russia’s war.
The decision is similar to previous sanctions by the United Kingdom and the European Union. The EU plans to stop importing liquefied gas from Russia starting in 2027.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the new US sanctions a “positive signal.” He said these measures could force Russia to return to negotiations.
