The military tension in Southeast Asia, which lasted for several months, has ended. Thai Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun and Cambodian Prime Minister Khun Manet signed a peace treaty in the presence of US President Donald Trump, according to Thmey Thmey.
The signing ceremony took place within the framework of the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. This agreement aims to restore stability in the region and put an end to long-standing disputes between the two neighboring countries.
Speaking at the ceremony, US President Donald Trump called the peace agreement a "big step towards stability in Southeast Asia." He also announced the release of 18 war prisoners held in custody in Cambodia.
"International control is important for the stability of peace. Therefore, special observers from Malaysia and other Asian countries will be deployed," Trump said in his speech.
For reference, the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia escalated at the end of May 2025. In the armed clashes, which lasted several weeks, both countries used artillery and airstrikes, and civilian casualties also occurred.
By July, due to the intensification of hostilities, the need for international community intervention arose. As a result of negotiations conducted through the mediation of the USA, China, and Malaysia, the parties first reached a peace treaty, and then a full peace agreement.
According to analysts, this agreement is of great importance not only for the geopolitical stability of the two states, but also for the entire region. This agreement is expected to mark a new stage in strengthening economic cooperation and border security.
