A bee resembling a devil's hornet was discovered in Australia

Australian scientists have discovered a new species of bee distinguished by unique horn-like features resembling devil’s spikes, Journal of Hymenoptera Research reported. The new species has been named Megachile Lucifer — “Lucifer” means “light-bringer” in Latin.

Researchers found these bees in the Bremer Range in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. They came across the species while observing rare wildflowers. According to data, this extremely rare species inhabits an area located about 470 kilometers east of Perth.

Interestingly, the large and prominent horns appear only in female bees. Scientists believe the horns may serve as protection or help in collecting pollen and resin for nest-building.

The head of the research, Professor Keith Prendergast from Curtin University, said he was watching the Netflix series “Lucifer” while naming the new species, and the bee’s appearance reminded him of the show’s main character. “The female had very strange small horns on her face. I was writing the description while watching the show, and the name ‘Lucifer’ just fit perfectly,” he said.

The scientist emphasized that this is the first time in 20 years that a new species from this group of bees has been identified. He added that the discovery highlights the importance of protecting native bees and preserving natural habitats.

According to the researchers, the new bee species lives within the same ecosystem as rare flowers, meaning climate change or human activity — particularly mining — could seriously threaten its survival.

“We may be losing species that have not even been discovered yet. Some play a crucial role in pollinating endangered plants and maintaining ecosystem stability,” warned Prendergast.
