Landslide destroys about fifty homes in Indonesia

A powerful landslide that occurred yesterday, November 21st, in Indonesia's Central Java province has become a major disaster. According to official data, at least 30 people have died as a result of the natural disaster caused by heavy rains, and about 40 more citizens are still considered missing. Reuters reported this, citing Abdul Muhari, a representative of the country's disaster relief agency.

The landslide first hit several locations in the city of Chilakap and the Banjarnagara district. Abdul Muhari stated that dozens of homes were severely damaged, and more than 900 residents were evacuated to safe areas. In some areas, the ground was heavily eroded, and structures were partially or completely destroyed.

According to him, the search and rescue operations are accompanied by a number of difficulties. Landslide basins filled with debris, rushing water masses, and expected rainfall are slowing down the work. "In such conditions, the risk of new landslides is high, so every step is being taken with extreme caution," he said.

At least 700 rescuers, including police and military personnel, are involved in the search in Chilapan. It is expected that the rapid response teams will continue their work until next week.

It was reported that the rainy season in Indonesia began in September, and meteorologists estimate it could last until April of next year. This further increases the risk of floods, mudflows, and heavy rainfall in many regions of the country.
