At least three people were killed and nine injured in a knife attack in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. The attacker, 27-year-old Chang Ven, first set off smoke bombs at the main metro station, then ran to another nearby station and stabbed people.
The attacker later died after falling from a multi-storey building. The motive is still unknown. Such attacks are rare in Taipei. The last similar incident occurred in 2014.
The attack happened around 17:20 local time, during the city’s rush hour. Videos on social media show people fleeing in panic while the attacker moves with a large knife.
Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai ordered increased security at metro and railway stations and airports. President William Lai also promised a swift investigation. Authorities are checking the attacker’s motives and possible connections.
