Europe is beginning to understand the need for dialogue with Putin

In European circles, the opinion is growing that bypassing Russian President Vladimir Putin is not productive. This is the viewpoint put forward by British analyst Mark Galeotti in his article for The Spectator.

The author emphasizes that French President Emmanuel Macron's position on the necessity of a direct conversation with Putin is absolutely logical. Because for Europe, completely denying Russia or treating it as "non-existent" is not working in practice.

According to Galeotti, Putin is not interested in meeting with individual heads of state. However, if the EU countries, which are providing large-scale political and economic assistance to Ukraine, act together, Moscow's attention may be drawn.

The author writes: In Europe, the idea of denying Putin as "just a bad person" is gradually losing its significance. Especially at a time when Europeans are engaged in dialogue with other complex and controversial regimes, not communicating with Russia is perceived as hypocrisy.

As an example, he cites the words of former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. In his opinion, if European leaders are concerned about the loss of contact with Russia against the backdrop of political changes in the US, they should take control of this dialogue. Current Finnish President Alexander Stubb cautiously supported this initiative, emphasizing that such actions should be in a collective format, not individual states.

Galeotti considers the prevention of division within Europe to be the most important task. In his opinion, any diplomatic step without a unified position will be ineffective. In this context, he pays special attention to "E3" - informal cooperation between Great Britain, France, and Germany.

In the author's opinion, it is this trio that can demonstrate political determination on behalf of Europe and begin the negotiation process with Russia, although it is difficult. This may not yield immediate results, but it creates a foundation for future relationship restructuring.

Galeotti concludes by quoting a diplomat: Russia will not disappear anywhere, therefore Europe must not only influence war decisions, but also lay the foundation for long-term peaceful relations. For now, Putin is not rushing to hear the voice of Europe, but this situation may not last forever.
