Ukraine extends martial law and mobilization for another 90 days

On January 14, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada approved draft laws to extend the country’s martial law regime and general mobilization for another 90 days. The documents were reportedly submitted to parliament by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Under the decision, martial law in Ukraine will take effect from February 3 for the next 90 days — until May 4. During the vote, 330 lawmakers supported it; at least 226 votes are required to pass a law.

At the same time, the Rada voted to extend the general mobilization period in the same way for 90 days: the decision was reportedly backed by 312 lawmakers.

Zelenskyy’s position on this issue had been known in advance: in late December 2025, he said the war with Russia would not end until Ukraine receives sufficient security guarantees, and therefore martial law would not be lifted until then.

Martial law in Ukraine has been in force since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Decisions on general mobilization also took effect at that time.

Another important aspect is border rules. In August 2025, international media also reported that the Ukrainian government allowed 18–22-year-olds to leave the country: according to Reuters, it was officially stated that men aged 18–22 were permitted to cross the border freely.

In summary, Kyiv is currently choosing to extend the wartime legal regime rather than change it. The next 90 days may prove even more decisive amid domestic mobilization policy, the frontline situation, and talks on external security guarantees.
