The fight for Greenland: How is the European Union responding to Trump?

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, relations between the European Union and the USA entered a new stage of tension. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Brussels' position on the threats made by Donald Trump regarding the island of Greenland would be "firm and uncompromising." He emphasized that the territorial integrity of Denmark will not be discussed.

Arctic security: Europe's new strategy

The head of the European Commission noted that the security of the Arctic region is a priority for Europe. However, he opposed Washington's individual actions:

  • Independent Europe: Recent geopolitical upheavals are pushing the European Union to develop its own security strategy and become militarily independent.
  • Icebreaker fleet: Europe plans to expand the possibilities of using icebreaker ships and special equipment, which are extremely important in the Arctic.
  • Cooperation: It was noted that Arctic peace can only be ensured together with all partners.

Trump's "trade war" and the threat of tariffs

US President Donald Trump considers the transfer of Greenland to US control a matter of national security. In his opinion, Denmark is unable to defend this huge island.

  • Economic pressure: Trump announced sanctions against eight European countries, including Germany, that opposed the annexation of Greenland.
  • Deadlines: From February 1, tariffs will be increased by 10%, and from June - up to 25%.

Ursula von der Leyen assessed this approach as a "big mistake" in relations between the allies.

Emergency summit in Brussels

Due to the extreme severity of the situation, EU leaders will hold an emergency meeting in Brussels on January 22.

  • Response: European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis stated that if the US imposes duties, it is "no exception" that the European Union will apply similar restrictions to American goods.

Now Europe is preparing to take decisive steps to protect not only its territory, but also its economic interests. This dispute over Greenland seriously tests the long-standing allied ties between the two continents.

In your opinion, will the European Union be able to withstand the economic pressure of the USA or will it be forced to make concessions regarding Greenland?
