Japan left without pandas: farewell in Ueno park

The Ueno Zoo in Tokyo has been especially bustling in recent days. Thousands of people are visiting the park to bid farewell to the last pandas left in Japan - Xiao-Xiao and Lei-lei. It was reported that the twin pandas will be returned to their homeland, China, on January 27th.

Due to limited visibility of the pandas, a special lottery system has been implemented at the zoo. Nevertheless, in recent days, it has managed to attract up to 4,800 visitors per day. Some visitors say they came to the park only to feel the farewell atmosphere, even though they couldn't see the pandas.

Xiao-Xiao and Lei-lei were born in 2021, making history as the first panda twins born at Ueno Zoo. With their departure, Japan will be completely without pandas in its zoos for the first time since 1972.
