The strike of railway engineers in Spain canceled hundreds of flights

In Spain, train drivers went on a three-day strike - as a result, thousands of people's plans were derailed on the very first day. According to local media, hundreds of flights on the Renfe network were canceled on the first day: there were strict restrictions, especially on high-speed routes. According to some estimates, about 350 high-speed trains have been canceled, and the total number of canceled trains is even higher.

The strike was organized by the Semaf trade union, which protects workers in the railway sector. Their main claim is simple: the issue of security. That is, "excuse me, the train is fast, but if it's not safe, no one needs speed." The trade union calls for strengthening the responsibility of those responsible for infrastructure security, strengthening railway safety, and reviewing the traffic safety monitoring system.

Against the backdrop of discontent, two recent major events are also being mentioned. For example, international publications reported casualties and injuries in the January clashes in the Cordoba region. The case of a train derailing in Catalonia has also intensified discussions - there, too, reports of casualties and injuries.

The worst part of the problem is that, despite ongoing negotiations with employers and the government, an agreement has not been reached. Therefore, the scenario "not with words, but with stops" was launched.

In Spain, the railway is the rhythm of daily life for millions of people. For example, Renfe reported transporting more than 537 million passengers in 2024 - imagine, this means almost an entire continent is in motion. Therefore, any strike instantly has a "domino effect" on both public mood and the economy.

Now the main question: will concrete security measures be taken faster or will the debate drag on? For now, the fact is that flights are decreasing, and people are stuck on the road. But from a long-term perspective, further tragedies can be avoided if this pressure leads to real security reforms. Yes, it's nerves now, but life tomorrow - that's what matters.
