An annular solar eclipse in the sky over Antarctica amazed everyone

In Antarctica, a truly rare scene was observed: an annular solar eclipse occurred in the sky. According to the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, this rare event was recorded on 17 February in the Southern Hemisphere.

According to the information, the most interesting phase of the eclipse lasted a little more than two minutes. However, the entire process stretched much longer, and in total it lasted about four and a half hours. Scientists also managed to photograph this event.

In what case does a “ring” appear? Specialists explain that when the Moon is sufficiently farther from the Earth, it cannot completely cover the Sun’s disk. As a result, the edge of the Sun is seen as a bright ring. To a person who knows how to observe, it seems as if a ring made of light is hanging in the sky.

But there is one point: during such an eclipse, it is almost impossible to see the solar corona or the stars around it. Therefore, as astronomers had said in advance, this event could be observed only from a certain point. And at the “Mirny” station in Antarctica, only a few people were able to watch the eclipse.

The sky reminded us once again: on Earth, even in the coldest, most remote regions, beautiful events happen that can amaze a person. We do not know when the next such event will occur, but we should always be ready for nature’s surprises.
