Xi Jinping begins purge in Chinese army

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has announced a fierce crackdown on corruption and disloyalty within the country's armed forces. Speaking at the annual session of parliament, he emphasized that there is no place in the army for those who are not loyal to the party and engage in bribery. This statement was made at a meeting attended by representatives of the People's Liberation Army of China and the People's Armed Police.
Analysts believe these actions are a continuation of a large-scale purge campaign that has been ongoing since mid-2023. Over the past period, a number of high-ranking members of the Central Military Commission, including the former defense minister and more than a dozen generals, have been removed from their posts. In particular, the investigation into General Zhang Youxia, considered a close ally of Xi Jinping, caused a major stir in political circles. According to some foreign publications, the general is suspected of disclosing state secrets, particularly nuclear data, to the US.
According to Bloomberg, the absence of 113 delegates at this year's National People's Congress indicates serious changes in the government. This figure is the lowest in recent years, second only to the situation during the pandemic. Observers link this to the purges being carried out in the army and the state administration system.
