Analysis of major global oil shipping routes

The global oil market has become overly dependent on a few narrow maritime corridors. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in the first half of 2025, the bulk of the world's seaborne oil passed through these strategic chokepoints. A total of about 73 million barrels of crude oil are delivered to global markets through these narrow passages every day. Reports naked-science.ru.

The Strait of Malacca is noted as the most important route. It carries 23.2 million barrels of oil per day, accounting for nearly 29 percent of global maritime trade. This route is vital for major economies such as China, Japan, and South Korea. Also, the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman is considered critical for global energy security. One-fifth of global oil consumption passes through this strait, and any geopolitical tension could lead to sharp fluctuations in oil prices.

In addition, the Suez Canal, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Danish and Turkish straits in Europe play a major role in oil logistics. Oil exported from Russia and the Caspian region reaches the global market through these very routes. Experts believe that any blockade or conflict at these strategic points could disrupt the global energy system and cause instability in commodity prices.
