Spain dismissed its ambassador to Israel: Madrid is not afraid of Trump's threat

Diplomatic relations between Europe and the Middle East reached their lowest point. The latest decisions of the Spanish government are causing a real stir in the international political arena. Zamin.uz presents details of the escalating tensions between Madrid and Tel Aviv.
The Kingdom of Spain has decided to minimize its official relations with Israel. The government officially dismissed the country's ambassador to Israel, Anu Solomon. With this, Madrid reduced the status of its diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv from an embassy to a temporary representative.
Chronology of diplomatic confrontation
The coldness in the relationship didn't start yesterday or today:
- May 2024: Spain officially recognized Palestinian statehood. In response, Netanyahu's administration recalled its ambassador from Madrid and has not yet appointed a new diplomat.
- September 2025: Spain returns its ambassador to Madrid for consultation.
- Current situation: The dismissal of the Ambassador means the absence of a high-level Spanish diplomatic corps in Israel.
Pedro Sánchez's firm stance
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is one of the most vocal critics of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip among Western countries. He not only condemned the massacre of civilians, but also put forward the following initiatives:
- International restrictions: The requirement to exclude Israel from the Eurovision Contest, just like Russia.
- Economic sanctions: Cancellation of multi-million-dollar military contracts (military orders) with Israeli companies.
- Accusation of apartheid: Government officials openly accused Tel Aviv of human rights violations and pursuing apartheid policies.
Iran war and Trump's threats
The US and Israel's military operation against Iran, launched on February 28, 2026, further complicated the situation. Spain has imposed a strict ban on the use of military bases on its territory to strike Iran.
"Our bases will not be used for catastrophic purposes, except in accordance with the UN Charter and agreements," said Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.
This decision angered US President Donald Trump. Although Trump has threatened to sever all trade ties with Spain, Sanchez remains firm on his word and urges Washington not to repeat Iraq's 2003 mistake.
Do you think Spain's independent and sharp stance could affect other EU countries? How do you assess Madrid's unwavering commitment despite Trump's threats?
