Have you heard of one of the rarest yet most astonishing events in medical history — the surgeon who operated on himself? This incident took place in 1961 at a Soviet research station in Antarctica, as reported by the BBC.
At the time, young surgeon Leonid Rogozov was working as part of an expedition. He suddenly began to experience symptoms of appendicitis. His condition worsened day by day, making an emergency operation necessary. However, due to a severe snowstorm and adverse weather conditions, outside help was completely impossible.
He then made a courageous decision: to perform the operation on himself. Of course, he did not do it alone: two technical assistants handed him instruments and held a mirror to help him monitor the process. Using local anesthesia, Rogozov began the surgery.
During the complex procedure, which lasted nearly 1 hour and 45 minutes, he had to take short breaks several times due to exhaustion. Nevertheless, he successfully completed the operation and saved his own life.
Most interestingly, he recovered quickly after the surgery and returned to his work. This event is recognized not only in medical history but also as a shining example of human willpower and courage.
