China Responds to Trump Tariffs With Hollywood Restrictions
China’s National Film Administration has announced plans to reduce the import of Hollywood films in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, Meduza.io reported.

“We will follow market rules, respect audience preferences, and moderately reduce the number of imported American films,” the agency stated.

According to Reuters, Hollywood films account for only 5% of total box office revenue in China. Moreover, U.S. studios receive just 25% of those earnings. In recent years, Chinese audiences have shown less interest in Western films.

Since 2020, about 80% of annual box office revenue in China has gone to domestic films, compared to 60% in previous years. A foreign film quota has been in place since 1995 — starting with 10 films per year, later increased to 34.

On April 9, President Trump announced that import tariffs on Chinese goods would rise from 104% to 125%, effective immediately. He accused China of showing “a lack of respect for global markets.”
