Uzbek ballet star Gulnara Mavayeva passed away

Uzbekistan’s People’s Artist and legendary figure in ballet, Gulnora Mavayeva, has passed away at the age of 94. According to the Ministry of Culture, she was not only a brilliant ballerina but also a mentor who shaped generations of talented dancers, leaving a deep mark in the country’s cultural history.

Born on June 30, 1931, in Tashkent, Gulnora Mavayeva began her artistic journey at the Tamara Khan Ballet School, graduating in 1941. She continued her studies at the Navoi Theater ballet studio, the Uzbek ballet studio at the Moscow Choreographic College (under M.A. Koxudova), and the pedagogical department of the Leningrad Choreographic College, which she completed in 1971.

Between 1945-1949 and 1951-1957, Mavayeva was a leading soloist at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Opera and Ballet. Over her long career, she mesmerized thousands of spectators with her outstanding roles in classical ballets, gracing the stage with unparalleled artistry.

Her contributions to the art of dance went far beyond the stage. The unique characters she created in Uzbek folk dances captured the admiration of audiences not only in Uzbekistan but also around the world. Her creative achievements and international performances helped elevate the reputation of Uzbek ballet and dance globally.

As a mentor, Mavayeva trained many prominent students, including People’s Artist Ma’mura Ergasheva and other honored artists such as Feruza Sagdullayeva, Gulnora Nizamova, Jamila Osmanova, and many more.

Until her last days, Gulnora Mavayeva shared her knowledge and experience with teachers and students at the Uzbekistan State Choreography Academy and the specialized choreography boarding school. Today, her students live and create in countries such as Uzbekistan, Canada, Russia, Israel, the USA, and Germany.

Gulnora Mavayeva’s life and career will always remain a lasting chapter in the history of Uzbek ballet and dance. Her name and shining stage moments will never be forgotten.
