Spanish gold coin sold at auction for a record $3.5 million

A Spanish gold coin minted in 1609 was sold for $3.49 million at the Numismatica Genevensis SA auction in Geneva. Reuters reports this.

The 339-gram coin was produced in the Spanish city of Segovia during the reign of King Philip III. The craftsmen minted it from gold brought by the world conquerors from the New World.

A large gold coin minted for King Philip III of Spain in 1609 broke all records and became the most expensive coin in Europe on sale in Switzerland on Monday.

According to the founder of the auction house, Alen Baron, the coin was created as a symbol of royal wealth and power. Its value could be compared to a person's long-term salary at that time.

The coin disappeared over several centuries. Around 1950, he ended up in the USA, where he was bought by a New York collector and sold to a Spanish buyer ten years later. It was later sold at auction to another collector whose identity was not disclosed.
