Afghanistan, surrounded by mountains, is a country prone to various natural disasters, but the greatest human and material losses occur specifically due to earthquakes. Research shows that since 1990, hundreds of earthquakes with a magnitude above 5.0 have been recorded in the country. This makes Afghanistan one of the most seismically active regions.
Experts note that Afghanistan is geologically located at the meeting point of two large plates. The Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates are in constant motion, and their pressure and sliding against each other cause earthquakes. Therefore, especially strong earthquake effects are felt in cities and villages among the mountains.
To prevent the catastrophic consequences of earthquakes, building codes and seismic monitoring systems in Afghanistan need to be updated. It is also important to regularly conduct training for the population on how to act and evacuate in emergencies. Such measures are crucial for preserving human life and property in the future.
Although Afghanistan’s earthquake susceptibility is a natural phenomenon, preparation and safety measures can significantly reduce their impact.
