The cost of timber supplies to Qatar has tripled
In brief

The cost of transporting construction timber from Austria to Qatar has tripled due to regional military tensions, particularly involving Iran. To avoid risks in the Strait of Hormuz, shipments are now rerouted through the UAE's Khor Fakkan port and transported via land before reaching Doha. Consequently, shipping costs per container have surged from $1,100 to between $3,600 and $5,000. Experts warn that these price hikes and extended delivery times could negatively impact construction projects in Qatar.

Prices for timber supplied from Austria to Qatar for construction have risen sharply. This is due to military tensions in the region, in particular, the situation with Iran, which has radically changed the routes of cargo transportation.

Previously, timber products were delivered through the Strait of Hormuz in about 45 days, but now, for security reasons, the vessels are being directed to the UAE port of Hor-Fakkaan. From there, the cargo is transported by land to Abu Dhabi, then reloaded and sent to Doha.

As a result of this circular logistics route, the cost of delivering each container increased from 1,100 to 3,600–5,000 dollars. This means an increase in prices by more than three times.

According to experts, the sharp rise in prices and the extension of delivery times by several more months could negatively impact construction projects in Qatar.
