South Korea to Ban Dog Meat Starting 2027

Starting in 2027, the slaughter of dogs and the sale of their meat for human consumption will be completely banned in South Korea. This decision has been officially confirmed by the government and is considered one of the most significant animal welfare reforms in the country.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the majority of dog meat farms have already ceased operations. Out of 1,535 existing farms, 1,265 have closed since 2024, accounting for 82 percent of the total.
Officials state that the remaining farms will be phased out by the end of 2026. Simultaneously, large-scale inspections will be conducted to identify legal violations and illegal breeding practices at both closed and active farms.
This decision was one of President Yoon Suk-yeol's campaign promises. In recent years, dog meat consumption has significantly declined in the country, with the tradition almost disappearing among the younger generation.
