Uzbekistan to Implement $243 Million Energy Projects in Afghanistan

 On August 17, 2025, contracts were signed between Afghanistan's Breshna Company (DABS) and Uzbekistan for four major electricity projects. This event is expected to have a significant impact on economic development and the strengthening of energy supply in the region. The ceremony was attended by Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, and Afghanistan's Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Barodar Akhund.

According to the agreements, the total value of the projects to be implemented from 2025 to 2028 amounts to $243 million. These projects will not only enhance energy supply but also create new opportunities for economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries. The projects include:

  • 500 kV Surkhon – Dasht-i Alavon electricity transmission network (capacity 1000 MW);

  • Expansion of the Argandi substation with a capacity of 800 MVA;

  • 220 kV Kabul – Sheikh Mesri electricity transmission network (capacity 800 MW);

  • Construction of the Sheikh Mesri substation in Nangarhar with a capacity of 126 MVA.

Once these projects are completed, Afghanistan will have the capacity to import 800-1000 megawatts of electricity from Uzbekistan. All works are expected to be completed within 18 months.

The implementation of these energy projects will not only strengthen Afghanistan's energy supply but also significantly enhance trade and economic relations between the two countries. Uzbekistan and Afghanistan’s cooperation is expected to reach a new level.
