A team of international researchers from Swabi University (Pakistan) has found that pomegranate fruit, peel, oil, extract and juice can reduce the risk of prostate, bladder, breast, skin, lung and colon cancer. The results of the study were published in the journal Food Science & Nutrition (FSN).
According to scientists, antioxidants play a special role in providing pomegranate with antiproliferative, antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties. Among them are beneficial substances such as polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins. They reduce inflammation, prevent the formation of tumors, and slow the growth of cancer cells.
In addition, scientists have noted that regular consumption of pomegranates prevents cancer metastasis - its spread to other parts of the body. Pomegranates are also rich in fiber, minerals, and vitamins, while containing a small amount of fat and calories. Eating them helps fight excess weight, which is one of the risk factors for cancer development.
Some studies show that the ellagitannins in pomegranates protect against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, pomegranates can affect the effectiveness of medications, including those for hypertension, so this product should be used with caution as part of adjuvant therapy for various diseases.
