In life, everyone can make the wrong decision or miss an important opportunity. Some spend many years regretting such moments, while others learn from them and take their next steps with confidence. But the feeling of regret and remorse becomes most pronounced in old age.
Huffpost conducted a survey among people over 80 to find out what their biggest regrets in life are. These results can be an important lesson for young people.
1. Worrying about what others think — a waste of life energy
Most elderly respondents said they used to worry a lot in their youth about what others thought. Now they understand that people actually don’t care as much as we think. Many regretfully recalled wasting time and energy thinking about others’ opinions before making any decisions. Their main advice for young people is: don’t live for the approval or judgment of others, but stay true to your values and live freely.
2. Overthinking the future — a source of constant anxiety and fear
Those over 80 shared that in their youth, they often worried about events that hadn’t even happened yet. Life experience has taught them that most worries and fears never come true. Some things happen unexpectedly, and others never occur at all. Therefore, they advise appreciating life and every day, making bold decisions instead of worrying.
Life lesson from the older generation: Time is the greatest wealth
The survey participants urged the youth to realize all possible opportunities instead of worrying, spend their time wisely, and get the most out of every day. Because the biggest regret in life is the years spent worrying and holding oneself back.
