The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that cases related to cholera have increased significantly in the world in recent years. In particular, during 2024, the number of cases of infection with this disease increased by 5% compared to 2023. Most alarmingly, a 50% increase in mortality rates was noted. That is, last year more than 6,000 people became victims of the plague.
Also, last year the number of countries where epidemic hotspots were detected reached 60. This is 15 more than in the previous year. Currently, the list of regions with the highest growth rates is led by African countries, some countries of the Asian continent, and the Middle East region.
Experts say that at least a quarter of the victims died without seeking medical attention. This indicates that the problem is acute in areas where access to medical care is limited.
By 2025, the global cholera crisis had not fully subsided. This is evidenced by the fact that since the beginning of this year, the spread of this disease has been recorded in 31 countries. The WHO assessed this situation as a serious threat and called on all countries, international donors, and local communities to act in unison.
