The problem that many call “black spots” is actually something else—medically known as open comedones. They are most commonly found around the nose, forehead, and chin.

The primary cause of blackheads is the clogging of pores with sebum and dead skin cells. Because the pore remains open, the substance inside reacts with oxygen, oxidizes, and turns black. It is not dirt, but the result of a chemical process.

Several factors contribute to this issue. For instance, those with oily skin produce more sebum. Hormonal changes—especially during adolescence or stress—exacerbate this. Additionally, improper skincare, heavy cosmetics, and comedogenic creams can increase the formation of blackheads.

The biggest mistake is squeezing them manually. This can lead to infection, inflammation, and even scarring.

To get rid of blackheads, proper skin care is essential: gentle cleansing, using mild scrubs or acids (such as salicylic acid) 1–2 times a week, and most importantly, choosing non-comedogenic cosmetics.

If the problem is severe, consulting a cosmetologist or dermatologist is the right decision, as professional extraction or therapeutic agents may be required.

“Blackheads” are a common condition, but they can be managed with proper care.
