Uzbekistan has introduced legal changes allowing temporary travel bans for certain individuals. The rule applies to suspects, defendants, or accused persons who are not under arrest but may try to evade court proceedings. The law has officially come into force.
Under the new rules, if there are grounds to believe that a person could leave the country and avoid trial without valid reasons, the court may restrict their right to travel abroad. This restriction can be applied even if the person is not detained. Prosecutors, investigators, or inquirers can file a petition to the court.
The court must review the petition in a closed session within 8 hours of receiving it. After review, the court issues a ruling either approving the temporary exit ban or rejecting it. The decision may be appealed or protested within 48 hours.
