The new UN report once again showed how dangerous the level of violence against women has become worldwide. According to the data, in 2024, 83 thousand women and girls were intentionally killed across the globe. The saddest part is that on average 137 women were killed every day by their husbands or close relatives.
According to the analysis, 60 percent of all victims are women and girls killed by men with whom they lived. For comparison: only 11 percent of murders of men are committed by a family member or spouse.
According to Sarah Hendricks, Policy Director of the UN Women Programme, femicide — the intentional killing of women on the basis of gender — never happens suddenly. She says it usually begins with stalking, threats or online violence, and over time turns into physical violence and eventually into murder.
The report states that the highest number of murdered women is recorded in Africa — 3 deaths per 100 thousand women. The second place is occupied by the American continent.
Germany also published its statistics. According to the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, 308 women became victims of violence in 2024, and in 191 cases the perpetrator was established to be the husband, former partner, or a relative.
The UN report shows that women’s safety worldwide still remains a serious issue, and identifying the roots of violence early and preventing it is one of the most important tasks.
