Cases of delayed medical assistance to prisoners in the Namangan and Jizzakh regions have drawn public attention. The Authorized Representative of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights — the Ombudsman — has taken these cases under supervision.
It was revealed that a prisoner held at Correctional Colony No. 29 in the Jizzakh region, despite being in serious condition, did not receive full medical care for two days. With a high fever and elevated temperature, he was taken to several medical institutions; however, one required payment or a referral, while another refused admission due to the absence of a specialist doctor. Later, severe lung-related illnesses were diagnosed.
Following the Ombudsman’s intervention, the prisoner was urgently transferred to the Republican Scientific Center of Emergency Medical Care, where he was hospitalized. After undergoing necessary procedures, he was provided with required medications.
In addition, inspections identified medical care issues at the temporary detention facility in Jizzakh city and at the pre-trial detention center in the Namangan region. In particular, a pregnant detainee submitted an appeal regarding medical examination and treatment.
All cases have been placed under special supervision by the Ombudsman, and appropriate measures are being taken. Law enforcement authorities emphasize that the health of prisoners is under state protection.
