Kudbiyev comments on discussions surrounding expensive watch
In brief

Sherzod Kudbiev, a senior Uzbek official, has responded to public discussions surrounding a luxury watch he wore, which social media users estimated to be worth around $50,000. The incident sparked debate about transparency and the assets of public servants, with one journalist noting that public scrutiny is natural and unanswered questions erode trust. Kudbiev acknowledged the criticism as valid, stating the watch holds sentimental value, possibly inherited from his late father. He emphasized that public officials must maintain modesty and adhere to professional ethics, calling the situation a valuable lesson learned.

Sherzod Kudbiyev, chairman of the National Committee for Sustainable Development of Urbanization and Housing Market, responded to discussions arising from the expensive watch he wore during a meeting with entrepreneurs.

Users on social media discussed that the watch is likely a luxury segment model, possibly a Vacheron Constantin Overseas or Breguet Marine, with an estimated price of around $50,000 USD.

Meanwhile, journalist Ilyos Safarov emphasized that public attention to the property of civil servants is natural for an open society, noting that officials remaining silent in such situations negatively impacts trust.

According to some assumptions, the watch might have been inherited by Kudbiyev from his father, Davlat Kudbiyev, who passed away in December 2024.

On April 19, Sherzod Kudbiyev commented via a video message, attributing the delay in his response to a heavy workload and a high-pressure situation.

"I saw the opinion and criticism expressed by Ilyos aka Safarov. I think it was a valid point. This watch is very dear to me; it evokes many memories. However, in any case, a civil servant must be humble," he said.

Kudbiyev also stressed that civil servants must strictly adhere to professional conduct and ethical rules at public events and official meetings, stating that this situation served as a lesson for him.

"At such gatherings and meetings, it is very important for a servant to maintain humility and correctly understand their responsibility. This has been a big conclusion for me. Moving forward, we will continue to serve honestly solely for the prosperity of the homeland," he concluded.

In short, this incident has once again brought issues of transparency, ethics, and trust between the public and civil servants to the agenda.
