Manchester City have completed the signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez on the final day of the transfer window. The Premier League champions have reached an agreement on a full and permanent transfer.
Manchester City entered into talks with Porto last week over the transfer of the 23-year-old.
Since Rodri suffered a serious injury at the start of this season, Manchester City have been closely monitoring the midfielder and they have now found their man.
Nico Gonzalez will officially become a Manchester City player, as reported by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano yesterday.
Manchester City and Porto have reached an agreement for the transfer of Nico Gonzalez for a fee of €60 million (£49.8 million, $61.5 million).
The terms of the fee and the structure of the deal were agreed after the first contact was made public last week.
Gonzalez had a €60 million release clause in his contract with Porto, but Manchester City will not pay the sum outright, but will pay it in stages within the framework of an agreed structure.
Manchester City have considered several candidates for the midfielder's position over the past month. As we reported, they tried to sign Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes, but it turned out that he was not going to leave St. James' Park.
That means Newcastle have made it clear that they are not considering any offers for the Brazilian. That could change at the end of the season.
Crystal Palace youngster Adam Wharton was also on Manchester City's radar, but he was unavailable this transfer window, so there were no offers for the Englishman.
However, Gonzalez's move to Manchester City is not surprising. According to Sky Sports News, Manchester City have been monitoring the Spaniard since he was a young player at Barcelona.
Interestingly, Barcelona will also receive 40 percent of Gonzalez's €60 million transfer fee due to a sell-on clause in his contract.
Gonzalez can play as a midfielder, striker or centre-forward. He has made 68 appearances for Porto, scoring 9 goals and providing 9 assists. Gonzalez is expected to gain experience and play a key role for Manchester City this season, competing with the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva, and most importantly, filling the huge void left by the absence of injured superstar Rodri.
