The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recommended that boxing be reinstated at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The decision comes after the creation of a new international governing body for boxing, the World Boxing Organization, The Independent reported.
Boxing was previously not officially included in the Los Angeles Olympics. This was due to a series of scandals surrounding the International Boxing Association (IBA), as well as controversies related to gender testing.
The Russian-led IBA was forced to suspend its activities in 2019 due to problems with governance, finances and ethics. In June 2023, the IBA was officially stripped of its status as an international sports governing body by the IOC due to shortcomings in the implementation of reforms.
Since then, the creation of a new governing body for boxing has become a major item on the agenda. The recently formed World Boxing organization, which includes representatives from 78 countries, was provisionally recognized by the IOC last month.
The IOC Executive Board is now expected to vote on whether to officially include boxing in the Los Angeles Olympics. If the vote is supported, boxing will regain its place on the 2028 Olympic program.
The decision is being hailed by the international sports community as a significant positive step for the future of boxing. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
