The 2026 World Cup will be the first in history to feature 48 national teams. So far, 15 more countries have won tickets along with the hosts - the USA, Canada, and Mexico. It is gratifying that the Uzbekistan national team is among the debutants - this is a new page for our football, a great responsibility, and a huge opportunity.
The authoritative European resource GOAL.COM recently ranked Uzbekistan 25th in the World Cup 2026 favorites ranking. Experts highlight the striking growth of the "White Wolves" in recent years, their competitive playing style, and their strengthened squad.
Uzbekistan's path to the World Cup was not easy. In January, head coach Srechko Katanec left his post due to health reasons, and the work was continued and completed by former national team midfielder Timur Kapadze. A goalless draw away against the UAE on 5 June 2025 guaranteed second place in qualification and officially secured a World Cup qualification.
The confidence of the team was further strengthened by a convincing 1-0 victory over Iran in the final of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. Thus, the Uzbeks practically confirmed their defensive discipline by ending seven of the last ten matches "dry."
Success in the competition largely depends on the stable play of the defensive line. Under the leadership of "Manchester City" player Abdukodir Khusanov, the arrow-like plain of the back row is one of the keys that opens the door to the playoffs. In the forward line, captain Eldor Shomurodov ("Istanbul Bashakshehir") offers experience and intensity, while 21-year-old Abbasbek Fayzullayev, who recently joined the Turkish club, gives new color to the attack with speed and creativity.
GOAL.COM analysts see the main tasks for the "white wolves" as follows:
- maximize the chances of a group draw;
- firmness in defense and effectiveness in standards;
- control of the game even in the 70-90th minute due to rotation and reserves;
- protection from injuries and mental stability.
The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Uzbekistan and Jordan, who will participate in the World Cup for the first time, will enter the historical arena. For the fans, the main story is just beginning: a worthy performance at the start, a path to the playoffs, and waving the flag high - this is now a real goal. "White Wolves," forward!
