MLS club Atlanta United has officially announced - the team will once again be managed by experienced Argentinian specialist Gerardo Martino. The 62-year-old manager signed a contract with the club until the end of the 2027 season. This decision was met with great interest in US football, as Martino is considered one of the first successful coaches in Atlanta's history.
In 2017, it was he who formed Atlanta United as the team's first head coach, and a year later - in 2018 - led the team to the MLS Cup title. This result was not only the first major achievement in the club's history but also presented Martino with a personal award - the "Coach of the Year" award.
Many believe that his return to the club will usher in a new era of Atlanta's recovery. Because Martino is a coach with his own style - fast pressing, high intensity, and aggressive attacks are characteristic of his teams.
Martino's coaching career is very rich. He has extensive experience in Europe and South America. At one time, he also managed one of the most prestigious clubs in the world - Barcelona, and also worked for the national teams of Argentina, Paraguay, and Mexico.
In recent years, Gerardo Martino has led Inter Miami under Lionel Messi, taking the team to a new level. Now he returned to Atlanta and began working on a new project.
According to the club's management, this decision was made to reform the team's philosophy and return to higher goals. "Martino is not only an experienced coach, but also an important figure in our history. He is one of the people who created the culture of Atlanta," the club said in a statement.
Martino said in his statement:
"I know this city and the community well. When I worked here, I felt the atmosphere. Now it's time to fight for higher goals again. We will open a new page and give fans another sense of pride."
Football fans are discussing the possibility of Atlanta United regaining the MLS championship after his return. Many consider Martino's return a "second beginning."
