FIFA Could Face Legal Action Over Ronaldo Case

Cristiano Ronaldo recently received a direct red card for elbowing an opponent during a match against Ireland. FIFA imposed a one-match suspension on Ronaldo, which the Portuguese forward has already served.

An additional two-match suspension was converted to a conditional penalty with a one-year probationary period. According to the Daily Mail, this decision by FIFA could potentially be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Teams facing Portugal in the opening matches of the 2026 World Cup group stage may file complaints against the leniency of Ronaldo's suspension. They may argue that limiting his punishment to a single match is unfair and that Ronaldo's participation could reduce their chances of victory.

The 2026 World Cup draw ceremony will be held on December 5 in Washington.
