Yuriy Nifikorov, a former defender for Moscow's "Spartak" team, recalled the "Red-Whites" record in the Champions League. During the 1995-96 season, the team won all six matches in the group stage.
"For the Champions League, Yuriy Yuran, Vasiliy Kulykov, Stanislav Cherchesov, and Dmitriy Shmarov, who rejoined Spartak, played a significant role. They had experience playing abroad and understood the level of European football well.
A strong team was formed with young players uniting around the experienced ones," Nifikorov said in an interview with "Championat." At that time, Spartak competed in a group with Norway's "Rosenborg," England's "Blackburn," and Poland's "Legia."
In the quarterfinals, however, they were eliminated by France's "Nantes" over two legs (0-2, 2-2). Read “Zamin” on Telegram!
